Ecclesia is founded on the principle that encountering the Word of God in community is transformative for Christians. Reading together, we learn and grow together, we wrestle together with the challenges presented by Scripture, and we rejoice together in the power of God’s life-giving truth.
Ecclesia is rooted in the worshipping community of St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church in New Haven. We warmly welcome the participation of all who are interested in the Bible. Members of this list hail from all over the United States and from several denominations. Lay people and clergy, seminary professors and students, devout believers and skeptics and folks who are just plain curious: all are welcome!
Here’s how it works.
1) We read Biblical books straight through, so as to honor the literary artistry and theological coherence of each book. We usually read one chapter per week. We alternate between books of the Hebrew Scriptures and books of the New Testament, with a two-week break after we finish each book.
2) A leader will e-mail the Ecclesia list regularly, sharing theological thoughts about the reading, remarks on historical context, and directed spiritual questions. All postings are archived on the Ecclesia web site, so they can be consulted there at any time.
3) You are warmly encouraged to post your own insights and questions about ways in which the Scripture reading matters to you. Highlight a favorite verse, share something that troubles you about a passage, make a connection to an issue in contemporary life. We have so much to learn from each other!

It is our hope that the Ecclesia forum will nurture your knowledge and love of the Bible, strengthen your growth in discipleship, and build up the community of St. Thomas’s and its friends in love.
May God bless your readings of Scripture.
