Hi lep-people,
Today I drove the Guilford coast to see what was flying.
Broadwing skipper- 40++
Peck's skipper- 10+
Least skipper-20+
Zabulon skipper-1
Dun skipper- 10+
Pearl crescant-abundant
Cabbage white- abundant
Hackberry emperor-2
Black swallowtail- 2 (fresh males)
Eastern tiger swallowtail-5
Eastern tailed blue-3
Great spangled fritillary-abundant
Sulfur butterfly-2
Painted lady-2
American lady-2
Red admiral-0
I drove a route today and did my own little count because tonight the
town of Guilford will do mosquito spraying along this same area. I hope
to get out Saturday to see if I notice any significant drop in the
numbers of butterflies. If I do I will report that as it may be of some
interest to some of you. I don't know what the chemicals are that the
town uses.
Downtown Guilford, two blocks off the green, at the intersection
of Water and River streets is a small park on the banks of the West
River with one Buddlea plant. On that butterfly bush there were 16
Broadwing skippers! Two males got into a hassel and spiraled up and a
Tree Swallow settled the affair by snatching one of the skippers out of
the air.

Finally at the porch light a beautiful small-eyed sphinx moth (Paonias
excaecatus) along with a million beetles, bugs, lacewings, tree
crickets, katydid (true and bush), fishflies (3 tonight), antlions (2),
and other stuff.
                                          Bill Yule
