Hi CT-leplisters - I had another Polyphemus Moth come to my lights last night - this time a male. Two weeks ago, Betsy (my wife) had found a female in our driveway - fresh and huge, with a wingpan of nearly half a foot! I rarely get to see the females, since it's the males who travel. I put her in a cage on my deck to call in some males, with the hope of getting some eggs, but none came. But she laid eggs anyway. Apparently she had already mated the night before and had just "uncoupled" that afternoon and drifted to the ground when Betsy found her.

The eggs all hatched a couple of days ago. They're feeding away on red oak.

I had another interesting moth come to the light sheet last night - a completely melanistic (black) Spiny Oak-Slug Moth. They are usually tan with pools (or sometimes puddles) of grass-green on the forewings.

Check those porchlights - there's some interesting stuff flying these nights!

Gotta get a digital camera...
