Gypsies

John,

I just got back from Bear Mountain, Rockland co. NY. Lots and lots of
Gypsies. I didn't cover a whole lot of ground. But from where my car was
parked, I could see on all the close by trees, several females per tree.
What was really strange (to me) is that there were females laying eggs on
sides of the cabins (that I was checking for roosting moths that were
attracted there by lights), both on wooden parts and stone wall parts. I
spent yesterday in the Long Island Pine Barrens -- lots of them there (also
lots of Spiny Oakworm Moths -- about 75 surrounding 3 lights that I found).
On the other hand, I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary here in
Queens. I suppose it's possible that their outbreaks are local -- sort of
like Banded Hairstreaks.
