I have also noticed an unusual amount of carpenter bees out in my area. It came to my attention because I rarely get them at all in my yard - but they're all over this year (it would be the year I built the deck!) Keep an eye out for a Large Bee-fly (Bombylius major) explosion next year! You've probably already been seeing them nectaring at flowers. They are those squat, fuzzy yellow two-winged (diptera), long proboscis-wielding insects hovering all over the place. They parasitize the larvae of solitary bees (like the Carpenter Bees).
It's getting close to Luna time - I've already gotten a couple of Lunate Zales (flying wood chips)!

I too have noticed large numbers of carpenter bees here in Guilford, many, many more than in any of the 17 years I've lived here. Reading the VA-MD-DE BUGS listserve they have experienced a similar population bulge this year.

Just had a male Black Swallowtail in the yard, NICE to see. I would use my own prefered name of Yellow Spotted Swallowtail but no one wouldknow what I was refering to. Has anyone else noticed the great number of Carpenter bees flying around this year orare they only in my yard. Bob Muller
