Finally got a chance to go butterflying...
Headed up the power lines off 145 in Westbrook (by the cemetery). When
I parked, an American Copper came to greet me. I then saw a black
swallowtail species fly quickly into the woods. Once I crossed the log pile,
I saw:
numerous Cabbage Whites
several Eastern Tailed Blues in varying stages of repair--one was very
worn, but I could still see a little orange spot (and it was brown on top)
a couple of Least Skippers--I think
a few Peck's Skippers
a couple of Pearl Crescents
two or three Duskywing species--couldn't get a good look, or a picture,
because those Carolina Locusts were all over the place!
a couple of skippers I couldn't identify--I did take a photo, but with a new
roll of film...
a Silver Spotted Skipper
a Tawny-Edged Skipper
and on the way out,
A Common Wood Nymph--first one I ever found on my own!
Immediately afterwards, a police car pulled up and asked if I was okay.
Something about seeing a female standing near a motorcycle at the side
of the road, staring into the grass. I told him I was looking for butterflies,
he asked if I had found anything. I told him I'd seen several species, and
that we'd counted butterflies there before. He said, "oh, so it's an
important butterfly area. Good to know." Maybe I should have given him a
membership flyer!
