East Haddam Butterfly Count & Shoreline Count

Hi All -

The Shoreline butterfly count last Saturday saw decent weather, but not optimum sunshine. Hank Golet, Rich Chyinski and I all covered different areas and tallied 23 species - nothing outrageous, but a Little Glassywing found by Rich was the first one I had heard of this year. There were 11 species of skippers, including my first Southern Cloudywing of the year.

I will conduct the East Haddam Butterfly Count this Saturday, July 5th, with a rain-date of Sunday the 6th. Those that want to meet in a big group and then split off into smaller groups will start at 8am at Haddam Meadows State Park in Haddam, down near the boat launch at the southern end of the park. We traditionally walk the meadows to start the count, cover a few other spots in the Park, then branch out.

We will re-form the group at the Mt. Parnassus Road Skating Rink in East Haddam at 1pm, to get a first tally and look for Bog Coppers, Meadow Fritillary, etc., and then split up again for additional coverage.

Anyone interested in participating for only a few hours in the morning or afternoon can meet us at either time, and you can participate as long as you would like.

Areas to (hopefully) be covered include Haddam Meadows SP, Brainerd Homestead SP, Harlo Haagensen Preserve, Pleasant Valley Preserve, Wapowog WMA, Babcock Pond WMA, Echo Farm SP, Hurd SP, Burnham Brook Preserve, and Devil's Hopyard SP.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating (preferably by e-mail, but you can call me at 860-873-9078). We always have fun.
