Andy Brand mentioned seeing a fresh Compton's Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis
vau-album) on July 8 in Hamden. I also saw one July 8 and another July
9, this morning, in suburban Westport. The individual this morning was
out and about at 7:20 am. The one yesterday, a very fresh male, spent
a solid 7-8 minutes at about 6:15 pm investigating sap drips from a
large white pine (Pinus strobus). It's proboscis was extended and
probing most of that time about the needles on a small branch (the bfly
was about ten feet up in the tree). There were quite a few smaller Diptera
and other insects exploring as well. Happy hour, I guess -- Larry
