First Underwings

The first underwings of the season in the Jamaica Bay area of New York
made their appearance June 30. They were single individuals of Catocala
ilia (Ilia Underwing) and badia (Bay Underwing). Both were about 10 days
earlier than the previous local early date. The only underwing
previously recorded in June around Jamaica Bay is ultronia, but that
hasn't been heard from yet.
