Tawny Emperor

The hackberry sapling that we purchased at a CBA field day years ago is finally defoliated! (Honestly, who but lep enthusiasts would get excited by a tree they paid good money for being eaten almost down to its leaves midribs?) Found a single tawny emperor caterpillar (Asterocampa clyton) in a folded leaf on the tree. Nearby nesting chickadees may have found the rest of them. It's only about 2cm so far - brought it indoors with plenty of host plant. Can anyone tell me how they pupate - will it need soil, dead leaves, or a branch to pupate on? And how long do they pupate?
Thanks,
