Butterfly Sightings

On Saturday, 6/30 Bill Banks and I visited West Rock Ridge St. Park in  
Hamden/New Haven where we found a total of 25 species of butterflies.  The  list 
for the day is as follows:
 
Lake Wintergreen section in Hamden:
 
Spicebush Swallowtail (1)
Cabbage White (38)
Coral Hairstreak (8) (My first of the year)
Eastern Tailed Blue (3)
Summer Azure (4)
Great Spangled Fritillary (1)
Mourning Cloak (2)
Red Admiral (4)
Appalachian Brown (2)
Little Wood Satyr (second brood) (2)
Monarch (1)
Silver-spotted Skipper (3)
Least Skipper (4)
European Skipper (5)
Northern Broken Dash (4)
Little Glassywing (23)
Delaware Skipper (1)
Dun Skipper (3)
 
Top of the ridge  south to the overlook in New Haven:
 
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (1)
Spicebush Swallowtail (3)
Cabbage White (8)
Clouded Sulphur (1)
American Copper (1)
Edwards' Hairstreak (4) (My first of the year; in an area with scrub oak  
between the tunnel and Judge's Cave)
Banded Hairstreak (10)
Summer Azure (1)
Red Admiral (5)
Silver-spotted Skipper (2)
Hoary Edge (9)
Little Glassywing (3)
Zabulon Skipper (1) (very worn male)
 
 
We found hairstreak numbers to be low compared with  typical numbers in prior 
years.
