On 7/3, I visited a couple of sites in northwestern Litchfield County to
look for butterflies.

In the morning, John Landon and I visited the Tory Hill tract on Route 41
that is owned by the Salisbury Land Trust. We found the following
butterflies:

Cabbage White (2)
Summer Azure (2)
Great Spangled Fritillary (8)
Pearl Crescent (1)
Northern Pearly Eye (1)
Common Wood Nymph (1) (My first of the year)
Least Skipper (10)
European Skipper (3)
Delaware Skipper (1) (My first of the year)
Hobomok Skipper (3)
Zabulon Skipper (2)
Dun Skipper (1)

In the afternoon, I visited a privately owned site on Canaan Mountain in
Canaan where I found the following species:

Cabbage White (1)
Banded Hairstreak (1)
Summer Azure (2)
Great Spangled Fritillary (17)
Question Mark (1)
Eastern Comma (1) (very worn)
Common Ringlet (7)
Monarch (1)
Silver-spotted Skipper (1)
Least Skipper (1)
European Skipper (70)
Long Dash (1) (very worn)
Hobomok Skipper (4)
Two-spotted Skipper (1) (male) (The skipper was seen a new site on this
property.)

At least at this site in Canaan, butterfly emergences appeared to be
running late compared with prior years.
