Please ID this caterpillar

Hi!  I was doing yard work today when I found this caterpillar.  I would like to see if I can get it to lay eggs, assuming it is a girl!  I looked in my books, but am too dimwitted to identify this myself.  Can anyone help me, and tell me what it eats?  Thanks!  Diane
