Identification required ~

[piper casel]

This large and beautiful moth spent four or fivedays sheltered in the corner of our porch next toour front door.  He was not disturbed by our goingin and out ~  and finally we had a warm night.  Hewas gone the next morning.
Is he common?  Or do you even have him there inConnecticut?  We live in the high Mojave Desert,in Hesperia, California.
