Twentieth Anniversary Celebration

Program 2:00 PM

The Whitney Center

Hamden, CT 06517

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the
Connecticut Butterfly Association. Please join us for the celebration of
this special milestone. To mark the occasion we are having a special event
– a buffet luncheon followed by a presentation by Dr. David L. Wagner of
UConn’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Dr. Wagner is the author of *Caterpillars of Eastern North America: A Guide
to Identification and Natural History *and has collaborated on several
other books including *The Connecticut Butterfly Atlas*. A well-known,
dynamic, and informative speaker, he will present an illustrated program
“The Tangled Fates of Plants, Caterpillars, and Birds.”

The talk will begin with a look at the various associations of plants,
caterpillars, moths, and butterflies, and then shift upward to address the
relevance of birds to caterpillars, and the reverse, caterpillars to
nestlings. Much of the talk will be given to a marvelous set of
macrophotographic images of caterpillars and the panoply of gimmicks used
by caterpillars to avoid being detected and eaten by birds. The “tail” of
the talk will tie plants, caterpillars, and birds together by considering
the consequences of non-native plants on nestling success and other
elements of biodiversity. The talk content will be highly relevant to all
with interests in the importance of biodiversity, species interactions,
pollination, non-native species, and climate change.

The luncheon will be buffet style with the following choices:

Mixed Salad with beets, goat cheese - caramelized walnuts on the side –
citrus dressing on the side

Quinoa Salad with roasted veggies

Penne pasta with tomato sauce, basil and olive oil

Marinated and Grilled Breast of Chicken

Sautéed Green Beans
