I am raising some Painted Lady caterpillars in my classroom that were purchased from a science supply company. Though I would certainly never release them into the wild, I wonder how many teachers would do just that out of ignorance and the desire to set them free. I'm not say that the observed American Lady butterflies aren't wild, but I imagine a lot of classrooms in Connecticut are/have raised butterflies this year.
A number of years ago, I had a fairly rare dragonfly in my classroom (the species escapes me at the moment). After a little sleuthing, it appeared that the dragonfly emerged from a freshwater tank I had, probably derived from store purchased elodea.

4/12, Stratford, Long Beach Blvd., McKinney NWR railroad trail - AMERICAN LADY , my first of year. It seemed VERY early for this species in CT. Is that the case?
