You can watch Pierids take off over water flying south across a Delaware Bay from Cape May, so can happen.

"Ferry assist" also a possibility.

Subject: [Ctleps-l] Extralimital - RI Sleepy Oranges

Hi all,

Harry Pavulaan and Marty Wencek found two Sleepy Oranges at Great
Swamp Management Area in RI over the weekend. This is not the first
time this species has been found in RI but missed in CT. I’m wondering
if they (and other species) follow the south shore of Long Island to
its end and then crossing Block Island Bay, in effect skipping CT.

In any case, it’s worth keeping a close eye on any Wild Senna patches in CT.
