Some butterflies that attempted to be noticed at the watch were a Variegated Fritillary and a Common Buckeye that landed, and a Black Swallowtail that had no qualms about flying right through a group of us hawk watchers. Some Monarchs were on the move and the three common Pierids were around. Another Black Swallowtail and a Fiery Skipper were among the unimpressive butterfly representation in the garden. More interesting in and around the garden was a remarkably showy and cooperative Black-billed Cuckoo. For those that are interested, I’ve posted a picture of it sitting on the ground inside the butterfly garden at http://stevewalternature.com/ .

Steve Walter

Bayside, NY
