Dear Friends and Colleagues -

My warmest wishes for a Happy Holidays!

Happiness is not an easy thing to come by these days, but I am
encouraged by the cover of the year-end issue of The Economist,
arrived today, with the bold headline
"Happiness (and how to measure it)"

Let me make a small positive contribution of a different kind, by
reviving the neglected positive side of all those unpaired negative
words like ungainly, disgruntled and uncouth. The piece that does
this most famously was in The New Yorker in 1994
<http://paul.merton.ox.ac.uk/language/gruntled.html>. Enjoy.

And let me draw on the same Merton College, Oxford website for some
simple seasonal ASCII illustrations
<http://paul.merton.ox.ac.uk/ascii/ascii-12.html>.

Again, Happy Holidays! --PJK
