<div>Way back when I still sent out mailings on the EAS-INFO list, I
had one about Sloyd</div>

<div>So I'm pleased to see the Eli Whitney Museum offer a program
about it. To quote from their mailing below (describing the Finnish
educator who devised Sloyd)</div>
<div><br></div>
<blockquote>"He believed that the discipline of working wood
sharpened observation, reinforced persistence and self-reliance,
taught the nature of learning, and linked students to their
community."</blockquote>
<blockquote><br></blockquote>
<div>And as you may remember, from the days when I was still teaching,
that teaching labs, and their morphing into special projects, were to
me always an important part of teaching. I felt that properly designed
teaching labs become an entirely valid extension of Sloyd into
engineering education. They "sharpened observation, reinforced
persistence and self-reliance, taught the nature of learning, and
linked students to their community [of engineering
practice]."</div>

<div>And you may note from the Wikipedia article
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slöjd>, that from its beginning
Sloyd it was seen as distinct from vocational training by its
educational principles:</div>

<div>"Sloyd differed from other forms of manual training in its
adherence to a set of distinct</div>
<div>pedagogical principles. These were: that instruction should move
from the known to the</div>
<div>unknown, from the easy to the more difficult, from the simple to
the more complex, from the</div>
<div>concrete to the abstract and the products made in Sloyd should be
practical in nature and build the relationship between home and
school. Sloyd, unlike its major rival, "the Russian
system"</div>
<div>promoted by Victor Della Vos, was designed for general rather
than vocational education."</div>

<div>In 1865, Uno Cygnaeus, a Finnish cleric and educator, devised
system of craftwork (Slöjd) to be integrated into the classrooms of
9-14 year olds. His goal was not vocational preparation (that's known
as the Russian system.) Cygnaeus believed that the intrinsic pleasure
of making practical and beautiful objects offset the stern Lutheran
drill of 19th Century classrooms. He believed that the discipline of
working wood sharpened observation, reinforced persistence and
self-reliance, taught the nature of learning, and linked students to
their community. Lofty goals. But notice that Finland and other
countries that preserve the Slöjd heritage top lists of the world
most effective education systems.</div>

<div>We have adapted Slöjd lessons for young hands. Find pleasure in
making practical and beautiful things. Plane, saw, bore (with a a
brace and bit), sand and finish a clever puzzle. Saw, whittle
(safely)**, and paint a Wood Gnome. And select your own project
(beginner and advanced) to craft with the new (also very old) tools
you have learned to use.</div>

<div>*<b> MAKE. Because</b>... is a a year long initiative to
explore the common origins of the MAKE Movement and the Museum's
experimental learning activities. We will consider the traditions, the
philosophies, and the cultures that value practical learning as a
legacy to be preserved and as essential preparation for change and the
future.</div>
