<div dir="ltr"><span style="">I think Latin aut and autem originated as signaling disjunction, but came to incorporate counter-expectional or adversary meaning. Not sure about the direction of change though. One would have to check the etymological dictionaries,
though. Maybe also: English ‘a kind, if stupid boy’, where there’s is subjective meaning overlaying the mere disjunction. </span></div>
