<P>That said, Dreamworks do seem to be labouring the point here in a way
which seems rather patronising: their remake is "Western" and the original
is "foreign", so needs a foreign title. </P>
<P>The film was shown internationally, both in festivals and on video
releases in both Asia and Europe under the romanised title "Ring" before the
remake was planned, so it seems rather unnecessary to put it out using this
direct romanisation of the katakana when the original title is already
pretty well known throughout every other territory in the world. Seems like
a case of complete appropriation more than an attempt to bring
Nakata’s original to a broader audience.</P>
