<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">Just a quick
note to mention that tomorrow, May 24th, represents the
80th anniversary of Seijun Suzuki’s arrival on this planet.
Arriving in the same year as the Kanto Earthquake that destroyed much of
Tokyo in the 20s, for me at least, Suzuki still represents one of
Japan’s most satisfyingly unique cinematic contributions to the
world.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

shall be settling down for an evening in front of the DVD player with some
of his best loved films, dusting down my copies of BRANDED TO KILL and GATE
OF FLESH and maybe popping down to Tsutaya and checking out some of his
haunting Taisho period films from the 80s, ZIGEUNERWEISEN or KAGEROZA.

<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Courier New'">Perhaps now is
also a good time to urge any interest parties to check out the recent Hong
Kong Platinum Classics DVD release of Suzuki’s forgotten golfing
psycho-drama, STORY OF SORROW AND SADNESs, one of those films that once
seen, is not easily forgotten. The confused Hong Kong subtitling only
enhances the feeling of delirium.<I><o:p></o:p></I></SPAN></P>
