The 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will commence on
4 April 2006 and following last year's Naruse Mikio (1905-69) Retrospective,
a screening of 14 films by Nakagawa Nobuo (1905-84), the master horror
filmmaker (actually a master of genre films), will probably be a revelation.
Born in the same year as Naruse, Inagaki Hiroshi (1905-80) and Toyoda Shiro
(1905-77) and to whom the still active Ichikawa Kon (1915- ) was
once an assistant, Nakagawa is well-known outside Japan mainly as the director
of horror classics like <i>Ghost Story of Yotsuya</i> (1949) and <i>Hell</i>
