Dear All,

This question is likely to be embarrassingly basic for
those of you who teach Japanese literature, but could someone suggest for me one
or two books listing 20th century Japanese writers - a sort of Kinejun or Pia
one-stop directory of writers that covers a wider, and more populist field
than Keene's 'Dawn to the West' volumes? I know people have suggested
on-line databases like Waseda's catalogue, which are really useful, but it would
be helpful to have something to hand that I could scrawl notes over.
And, for my current task, running down Japanese names in cyrillic, where
both I and the compiler could have made transcription errors, a hard-copy list
would be better for highlighting alternatives.

As well as something I could buy in Japan next month, I
would be interested in books I could get my hands on in London right
now. And a similar index of pre-war left-leaning figures would help
me as well.

As ever, any help appreciated,
