The most famous name is the late Nick Alexander, an ex-pat Brit living in Rome who became the undisputed 'king' of English-language dubbing in Italian, Spanish and French cinema, where 'post-dubbing' was the common practice. By the mid-1970s Alexander's name was well-known enough to be included in the opening credits of a movie (as opposed to buried in the end credits) and I know of more than one individual who has opted to purchase a film on the basis of Alexander's abilities as a dubbing director. By the 1990s he was being consulted as a key player in (and authority on) that era of European cinema, making him probably the only dubbing director to have achieved a
status and reputation close to that of directors and other above-the-line professions.</DIV>

I think it's a moot point whether film translators are becoming more visible - certainly not at a cinemathecque near me - but the question of regional translation is particularly invisible. And there is correspondence going back to the silent era on regional English difficulties. It wasn't, by the way, until I was talking in a pub with Marcus that I discovered how Marcus pronounces 'Babel' (and, I think, vice versa).</FONT></DIV>

Does anyone know of any good literature (in English or Japanese) regarding the change and evolution of cinema, throughout the 20th century?
