Hello --<div><br></div><div>I'm based here in Berlin and have seen several of the Japanese films in the festival that have already been screened for the press.</div><div><br></div><div>FIT - Mico-budget drama that is aesthetically disappointing and narratively over-ambitious. Multi-threaded storyline about individuals with some sort of emotional problem/disorder. Some bits work better than others.</div>
<div><br></div><div>HEAVEN'S STORY -- I was hoping that this nearly 5 hour work would be this year's LOVE EXPOSURE, but it was a far cry from that. Performances are outstanding, but I found myself thinking too often of Aoyama's EUREKA, which is a far superior film. </div>
<div><br></div><div>KAZOKU X - The best Japanese film I've seen thus far at the festival. Extremely dysfunctional family drama. Simple, powerful, and oh so bleak.</div><div><br></div><div>SEKAI GOOD MORNING -- I think I've overdosed on downbeat awkward teen dramas. Like FIT, has interesting moments, but doesn't really hold together. </div>
<div><br></div><div>Very excited about the Shibuya Minoru retrospective. Have only seen one of his films.</div><div><br></div><div>If anybody has questions about the festival or Berlin, please feel free to ask.</div><div>

Whie I have seen and enjoyed one (or maybe two) films directed by Minoru Shibuya (a director who started his career working with Ozu at Shochiku), I've never seen any of the ones being shown in Berlin. I would be particularly interested in Radishes and Carrots, which was a project Ozu started before he became incapacitated by cancer. This film (starring lots of Ozu's regular performers) was sort of a farewell tribute (finished the year after Ozu died).<br>

I reported on my blog about the film industry statistics that Eiren just released.<br>

<br>
Basically, it was a record setting year for total BO, and the best attendance figures since 1974. Japanese films again beat foreign films, but multiplexes continue to take over, leaving independent theaters in danger.<br>
