Doctors Without Borders has specifically stated that money donated
to their organization cannot be targeted exclusively for Japan. A
representative stated that people who wish to donate money for Japan
should donate to other organizations.
They mainly operate in countries without adequate health
infrastructure, and Japan is not a priority for them.
donated to the American Red Cross, only $10 million has made it to
Japan (not surprising with such a large organization). I recommend
donating directly to Second Harvest Japan or Doctors Without
Borders (they have a team on the way here, if they haven't already
arrived). The big challenge right now is fuel shortages--groups
like Second Harvest are getting plenty of donations of food and
goods, but delivery is stalled because there isn't enough
gasoline. At least with Second Harvest, though, there's very
little bureaucracy to deal with and the goods will reach those who
need them faster.
to donate to an institution like the Red Cross,I would
be inclined to avoid any mileage program. It mainly
benefits the airline since mostly they exchange (and
benefit from) very precious miles for trinkets or
donations which are not clear in numbers, dates or
recipients.(When will those blankets or tinned food
reach any shelter? ) That huge companies like airlines
have to resort to this instead of donating directly
speaks for itself. If you are thinking of donating,it'd
be best to do so directly with less intermediaries.

Most trustworthy is Japan Red Cross. Or
contact your local Red Cross.
