Dear all,

In collaboration with the Cinematheque Quebecoise and colleagues
from McGill University & Concordia University, I'm organizing
a three-day film festival and a one-day symposium, entitled
"Visual Underground: Theatre Scorpio & Japanese Experimental
Cinema of the Sixties" to be held in Montreal this September. This
event will take place on the weekend of September 16th (Fri), 17th
(Sat), and 18th (Sun). This event is designed to accompany a large
retrospective on the Art Theatre Guild films (which will be
traveling from Paris, London, and to Montreal this summer/fall),
hosted by the Cinematheque Quebecoise. The confirmed keynote
speaker for this joint celebration of Japanese avant-garde and
experimental cinema of the 1960s and 1970s, is the eminent
filmmaker and theorist Matsumoto Toshio.

As some of you may already know from Julian's email, the BFI and
Birkbeck College will be hosting the London counterpart of the ATG
Retrospective and a symposium in July. If you are in North
America, and cannot go to London to catch these exciting films,
please do come to Montreal!

We are still in the process of finalizing the program, but the
experimental film program part of "Visual Underground" that will
run from Sept 16th-18th will screen works of the following
filmmakers: Matsumoto Toshio, Oshima Nagisa, Adachi Masao,
Jônouchi Motoharu, and Okabe Michio.

I will follow up with more detailed information about the event,
and will send you a link to the website soon. In the meantime, if
you are interested in coming to Montreal to attend the screenings
and the symposium, and looking for an affordable accommodation,
the following website is very useful: www.airbnb.com. Just to let
you know, most of the event will take place at various venues in
downtown Montreal, around McGill University and Concordia
University. Please do mark your calendar, and I hope very much to
see you here.

Best wishes,
Yuri
