I recently finished my PhD in media studies and find myself underemployed<br>
with considerable time on my hands. I&#39;m thinking of using some of my spare<br>
time to do some translation of film-related essays and/or books from<br>
Japanese into English, and I have a couple of questions that I&#39;m hoping some<br>
of you may be able to respond to.<br>

1. What texts are in great need of translation? I am aware that Yomota<br>
Inuhiko&#39;s _Nihon eiga-shi 100 nen_ has been designated as a book in need of<br>
translation, but the last time I spoke with Yomota-sensei about this<br>
(admittedly almost a decade ago) he said that he had given permission to<br>
translate that book to an Australian researcher. What other works are out<br>
there - both in the public domain and not?<br>

2. What would be the &#39;issues&#39; involved in engaging in such translation,<br>
particularly in terms of copyright? Is this a can of worms waiting to be<br>
opened, or is there a place for the kind of work I&#39;m considering?<br>
