<html><body><div style="color:#000; background-color:#fff; font-family:HelveticaNeue, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, Lucida Grande, Sans-Serif;font-size:12pt">To answer my own question posed on 1st March, I had indeed got the wrong end of the stick about the meaning of Seishun hōkago, although I think I was intended to. There is only one character in the drama who is under forty (played by Kobayashi Chitose). Near the end, the two other main characters, played by Sada Keiji and Miyaguchi Seiji have a bar-stool conversation - (these two were both in Akibiyori / Late Autumn). One says, about Kobayashi's character, "It's the evening of her youth". The other quips, 'But for us, it's closer to midnight'.<br style="" class="">The film's title was subtitled in Paris as 'Le soir de la jeunesse'. Apparently, it was after making Akibiyori that Ozu wrote this screenplay. The line delivery was often too fast for me to read the
