<div>Thanks for posting this Aaron. Indeed Eiga Geijutsu's disappearance, if it happens, will be quite symbolic of the way film criticism in Japan (especially in print) has developed in the last decades. Eigei didn't always play fair and has a complicated legacy, but it stands for a very opiniated form of criticism that really believes that film matters. It has been in perpetual crisis and gone through a number of last-minute rescues in the last two decades, which might explain why this news hasn't created too many waves in Japan, even among those that still read it. </div>

<div>Eiga Geijutsu (Film Art) is a film magazine that was founded in 1946. Having written for them many times (including choosing the yearly best ten for many years), I know the good and the bad points about Eigei, but with there being very few places to write critical accounts of film these days, it would be sorely missed if it disappeared. But it is losing money with every issue (Terawaki Ken said on Facebook it’s in the red about 500,000 yen per issue).</div>
