Thank you Aaron, Naoki, and everyone who responded. I'm glad it's not just my obsession! Thanks also to Aiko Masubuchi and Kazu Watanabe of Japan Society for doing an amazing amount of work getting everything ready. I wish I could have shown more films and covered more periods. Maybe next time...?

All but two of the films (You Can Succeed, Too and Irresponsible Era of Japan) are hard-subtitled. The Japanese Musical Film
April 8–23, 2016

Japan Society, New York

This spring, Japan Society celebrates the astonishing yet little-known
world of Japanese musical films. The series focuses on the golden age of
the "popular song film" starring teen idols and TV stars from the 50s
and 60s. It also reaches back to prewar singing samurai and forward to
twenty-first century genre mashups – 10 songful cinema gems all on 35mm!
Musical performance in these films incorporates Japanese musical
tradition as well as the utopian space of the Hollywood musical to
create a rich commentary on the intimate and unequal relation between
Japan and the USA. This series is guest curated by Michael Raine, Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Western University, Canada.

Friday April 8, 7pm: You Can Succeed, Too (君も出世ができる, 1964)
Saturday April 9, 3pm: Series Curator Lecture: Popular Song and Performance in the Japanese Musical Film
Saturday April 9, 4:30pm: So Young, So Bright (ジャンケン娘, 1955)
Saturday April 9, 7pm: The Stormy Man (嵐を呼ぶ男, 1957)
Tuesday April 12, 7pm: Singing Lovebirds (鴛鴦歌合戦, 1939)
Friday April 15, 7pm: Twilight Saloon (たそがれ酒場, 1955)
Saturday April 16, 4:30pm: Oh, Bomb!
