another of his Japanese retrospectives of popular cinema, this time on
science fiction, 'Beyond Godzilla', to be accompanied with the customary
book to add to his series. Unfortunately I can't make it this year due
to family commitments. Pity. Presumably the work of TSUBURAYA Eiji

<div style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;">UDINE – Though <strong>'Japanese Science Fiction'</strong> usually makes us Westerners think of <strong>Godzilla</strong>, the <strong>eighteenth edition</strong> of the <strong>Far East Film Festival</strong> is ready to expand our horizons with a retrospective called - not coincidentally - <strong>Beyond Godzilla - The Mind-Blowing Alternative Futures of Japanese cinema</strong>! Curated by expert <strong>Mark Schilling</strong>, who also edited the <strong>book of the same name</strong> created for the occasion and beautifully illustrated by <strong>Francesca Ghermandi</strong>, <strong><em>Beyond Godzilla</em></strong> consists of <strong>10 films</strong> and will bring to <strong>Udine</strong> a grandmaster of Japanese Sci-Fi: <strong>Obayashi Nobuhiko</strong> (born 1938), the visionary director who on the <strong>25<sup>th</sup> of April</strong> will receive the Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement in the company of his cult film <strong><em>House.</em></strong></span></div>
<div style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;">"Fans,” writes <strong>Mark Schilling</strong>, “have long considered Japan a science fiction cinematic superpower, especially as regards one specific sub-genre – monster movies – and one character: Godzilla. In fact, the Japanese science fiction films of the Fifties and Sixties, which were packed full of space rockets, UFOs and all kinds of exotic weapons and gadgets, may have been inspired by Hollywood's alien invasion films, but their unique style, their energy and their imagination have influenced not only Japanese animators and directors, but also their counterparts in the West."</span></div>
<div style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;">So get ready for the <strong><em>fantastic</em> </strong>(because they really are!) <strong>10</strong>: <em>The Mysterians</em> (1957), <em>Matango</em> (1963), <em>Invasion of the Astro Monster </em>(1965) and <em>Latitude Zero</em> (1969) by <strong>Honda Ishiro</strong>, <em>House </em>(1977), <em>School in the Crosshairs</em> (1981), <em>Exchange Students</em> (1982) and <em>The Girl Who Leapt Through Time</em> (1983) by <strong>Obayashi Nobuhiko</strong>, <em>Blue Christmas</em> (1978) by <em>Okamoto Kihachi</em> and, as the icing on the cake, <em>Gamera 3</em> (1999) by <strong>Kaneko Shusuke</strong>. A wide-ranging exploration of the Japanese imagination which doesn't just stop at that “big scaly beast”' (as Schilling calls Godzilla!) or at our laziness as viewers.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;">But why don't we let our <strong>guest of honour</strong>, Mr. <strong>Obayashi</strong> (who thanks to <strong>FEFF 18</strong> finally returns to Italy - he directed several TV commercials here in the seventies) speak for himself, in a few short phrases which summarise an entire cinematic philosophy: "Imagining the moon is better than walking on its surface. <strong>Films are a way of remembering, not of recording.</strong> I like documentaries because they seek to reveal the truth about a subject without fully succeeding and I think the irony of this is very interesting. There's a sort of unrequited love about documentaries, while films are a <strong>pure falling in love</strong> that asks for nothing in return. It is a one-sided love."</span></div>
<div style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12pt;">The same love that, since the 10<sup>th</sup> of April, 1999, has been motivating <strong><em>Fareasters</em> from all over the world</strong> to return to the <strong>little outpost of Asia called Udine</strong>!
