As you can see, this is a diverse, solid series of 21st century offerings. In addition to what Kazu wrote, note that a significant number of films helmed by women directors are included. The Japan Society is also screening Naomi Kawase's <i>True Mothers</i>, Japan's nominee for Best Foreign Film Oscar<i>,</i> as part of its Virtual Screenings thru Feb. 25th:</div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://www.japansociety.org/event/true-mothers">https://www.japansociety.org/event/true-mothers</a></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Start with the Japan Society series. But here are a couple of additional screening opportunities for those of us in the US:</div><div><br></div><div>MoMA (Museum of Modern Art in New York) is screening a program of short 1960's experimental works via a program entitled "Japanese Expanded Cinema: An Online Finale", which runs from Feb/ 11th thru the 25th. This is a free program, but admission is restricted to MoMA members only:</div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5286">https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5286</a></div><div><br></div><div>JICC, the Japan Information and Cultural Center of the Japanese Embassy in Washington, has presented films online over the past several months as well, many tending to be more commercial. With Valentine's Day forthcoming, this weekend it is presenting <i>Little Nights, Little Dreams</i>, a pleasant romcom. Consisting of 30 feature films and shorts, the lineup offers a really varied selection of Japanese narrative fiction films from the past 20 years including works by well-known directors like Hirokazu Kore-eda and Naomi Kawase as well as those of less internationally-known filmmakers such as Shuichi Okita and Satoko Yokohama. In addition to the main body of 20 films (one per year), there is a 3-film retrospective of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s harder-to-see films from this millennium that is accompanied by an hour-long conversation with the director introduced by Kent Jones. There is also a 6-film selection of films by up-and-coming Japanese filmmakers that are available to stream for free. Lastly, there are a few free talks on offer, including Q&As and reflections on the past 20 years of Japanese cinema from participating filmmakers and film critic Mark Schilling.<br>

This series is sponsored and co-presented by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, as part of a new initiative called the ACA Cinema Project. With their support, we could license many Japanese films that would have otherwise been fiscally impossible to secure, so in this way it is something of a special opportunity. Many of these titles are currently unavailable to stream anywhere else within the US or otherwise unavailable with English subtitles.<br>
