<div dir="ltr"><div dir="auto"><font face="arial, sans-serif">Dear all,</font><div dir="auto"><font face="arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div dir="auto"><font face="arial, sans-serif">Just as a side note, the footage used in <i>Witches of the Orient</i> is from 挑戦 Challenge (1963), a short documentary directed by Shibuya Nobuko. The short was awarded at Cannes in 1964, and Shibuya, among other things, ended up contributing to Ichikawa's Tokyo Olympiad. </font></div><div dir="auto"><font face="arial, sans-serif"><span style="color:rgb(15,20,25);white-space:pre-wrap">Shibuya was a script supervisor, filmmaker, and video reporter. Born in Dalian in 1932, she moved to Japan only after the war. As a script supervisor she worked for Dokuritsu Pro with Imai Tadashi, Shindō Kaneto, and Yamamoto Satsuo and </span><span style="color:rgb(15,20,25);white-space:pre-wrap">in the next decades, Shibuya also made documentaries for TV, and as far as I know, worked as an editor for some non-fiction films directed by others (Iizuka Toshio, for instance). She passed away in 2016. <p style="margin-top:6pt">Partly answering my own question (again) about the film, <i>Witches of
the Orient </i>at Nippon Connection and elsewhere, “perhaps these subjects have
been explored previously in Japan ?”, it turns out that this subject has been
well written up much closer to my neck of the woods, by Helen Macnaughtan of
SOAS. A good one-stop account is her paper<span style="font-size:11pt"> </span><span style="font-size:11pt">in </span><i><span><a href="https://eprints.soas.ac.uk/17379/1/Oriental%20Witches%20Manuscript%20pre-print%20August%202013.pdf" rel="nofollow noreferrer" target="_blank">Sport
in History</a></span></i><span> . It tells
me that manager Daimatsu was historically anything but the silent voice he is
in Faraut’s film, so that is clearly an editorial choice for the film.</span></p>
<p style="margin-top:6pt"><span>The reason I know this now, when
I didn’t on the 8<sup>th</sup> June, is that Helen is scheduled to conduct an
online Q&A with Faraut organised by the Japan Society of the UK on Wed 21<sup>st</sup>
July at 1830 London time (BST).</span></p>
