just noticed that KAWAMURA Genki got ‘best director’ at San
Sebastian last month for his debut direction <i>Hyakka</i>.
He has been producer on quite a string of films, but also a commercially
successful novelist, and his first film direction is from the novel that he
wrote in 2019.</p>

yesterday evening (Tuesday) as part of LEAFF. There are already two fine,
qualified, english-language reviews<span> by
<a href="https://www.screendaily.com/reviews/a-hundred-flowers-san-sebastian-review/5174646.article" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jonathan
Romey</a> and <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2022/09/01/films/film-reviews/a-hundred-flowers/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">James
Hadfield</a>. You probably wouldn’t want to hear my take on it, as I came with
baggage on caring for a relative with dementia – to me, the film veered to the
feel-good on an experience that, on the personal level, has no upside. Imamura
Keisuke’s inventive camerawork, for example in the ‘reveal’ episode, isn’t
directed enough to just seem a story within a discovered diary and takes the
point-of-view of the dementia patient which she no longer has. But I thought it
was a potentially fine script of Kawamura, if not so strong in, err... the
direction.</span></p>
