<p class="ydp68fe17ddMsoNormal" style="margin-top:2.0pt">A completely different point arising from my

<p class="ydp68fe17ddMsoNormal" style="margin-top:2.0pt">The retrospective on Kinugasa
Teinosuke included some familiar films and others hitherto inaccessible in the
West. Also shown was the fairly recently rediscovered final reel of <span lang="JA" style="font-family:"MS Mincho";mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:black;mso-fareast-language:JA">鬼あざみ</span><i><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:black"> Oni-azami</span></i><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:black"> of 1927, in excellent condition, found at the Jugoslovenska
kinoteka in Belgrade. It showed the balletic Hasegawa Kazuo, then known as Hayashi
Chōjirō, in the flower of his youth, but I have never seen mention before of
this film getting to the West. It was immediately apparent that the intertitles
were not Serbian but in Roman orthography, and I’m told the language was
distinctly Croatian. Although I was referred by the NFAJ, I’ve still not heard
back from Jugoslovenska kinoteka. It’s likely the film got to </span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:black">Belgrade</span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:black"> in a centralizing move in the
50s, strangely like the undocumented accession of <i>Kaguya-hime</i> into the
BFI at this period.</span></p>

dig further into the film’s history but would happily defer to, or join anyone
placed to discover more ...</span></p>
