  * HOLIDAY DINNER AT HGS / (12-09-2008 5 - 8 PM)/
Enjoy a dinner featuring favorites of the December Holidays in the
US- meat, vegetarian/vegan entrees, sides, salads, and special breads
& desserts from around the world. Live Holiday music from the
Citations. Cost is regular meal price- meal plan, cash, points or
charge accepted. NO undergraduate transfers this night- only
Grad/Prof Students & postdocs & their guests/families may attend.

YUHS Student Health Education invites students to the annual Stress
Down Day. Join us for free chair massages, reiki energy healing,

the Presidents' Room (above Commons), Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove

  * GRADUATE SCHOOL HOLIDAY RECEPTION  / (12-11-2008 4:30 - 6 PM)/
Join Graduate School Dean Jon Butler for a festive reception
featuring food, drink, and good company as we celebrate the winter
holiday season. All GSAS students, faculty and staff and their

  * GRAD NIGHT @ YALE PHILHARMONIA: MESSIAEN: TURANGALILA  /
(12-12-2008 8 PM)/
Reinbert de Leeuw, guest conductor. Messiaen: Turangalila Symphonie.
Wei-Yi Yang, piano. Part of the Messiaen Centenary Celebration at
Yale. Program will be repeated in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall
on Sunday, December 14. This piece is rarely performed because of its
complexity and scale. Come here one of the worlds finest music schools
perform this astonishing work! Woolsey Hall. Admission Free.

  * ARTSPACE UNDERGROUND   / (12-13-2008 8 - 11 PM)/
Nightlife is hot again. ArtSpace introduces an exciting new monthly
event, ?Artspace Underground.?  The ?Underground? is an after hours
party to celebrate art, music and the contemporary lifestyle.
Featuring live performance pieces by artists, sounds from the hippest
local bands, a DJ, exotic bar specials by 116 Crown, and specially
priced ?Art-2-Go? by local contemporary artists. Admission $2,
includes one free drink ticket and $6 drink specials. The first
Artspace Underground features a performance by Yale School of Art
sculpture student, Laura Marsh. Also featured on December 13th are
the musical stylings of "Gets the Girl." (50 Orange Street; corner of

  * THE MCDOUGAL 9TH WINTER BALL - MARK YOUR CALENDARS! / (02-07-2009
9 PM - 2 AM)/
TIME FOR A "FORMAL" FLASHBACK: the Winter Ball is less than 2 months
away! Don't forget to bring back your fancy dresses and suits and put
them to good use! Entertainment features music from 9pm-11:30pm,
followed by DJ Awesome, for dancing until 2am in the grand ballroom
at the New Haven Lawn Club.  Tickets available in January 2009! 

  * BLUE DOG CAFE READING WEEK HOURS / ( )/
12/8 thru12/12, the Blue Dog Cafe will have shortened hours during
reading week. We will be open from 9am-2pm M-F. The Blue Dog will
close on Friday 12/12 for Winter Break, reopening in January. 

  * MCDOUGAL CENTER HOURS THROUGH JAN 2009 / ( )/
Center open 9a-11p thru Dec. 11; 9a-5p 12/12;  Center closed weekends
thru 1/11/09; 9a-4:45 p 12/15-23. Closed for Winter recess 12/24-1/4.
Center offices are being renovated 12/12- 1/7, so tix office &
limited services will be available with staff relocated in the

  * ERIN'S COMMUNITY SERVICE TIP OF THE WEEK
Following World AIDS Day, you can make a difference in fighting this 
disease in New Haven by getting involved with groups like AIDS Project
 New Haven (www.apnh.org), AIDS life CT (www.aidslifecampaign.org),
and  the AIDS Interfaith Network (www.aidsinterfaithnetwork.org). 

  * ELIZABETH J'S HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK
Traveling over winter break? Remember that all students covered under
YUHS for emergency care when you are away from the New Haven area. If
you need such care, contact the YHP Care Coordination Department
[(203) 432-7397] within 48 hours (or 2 business days) of receiving
emergency outpatient treatment or being admitted to an emergency
facility. They will (1) notify YHP clinical staff of your condition
so that they can coordinate your care as appropriate or make any
further arrangements for your care and (2) pre-authorize any
necessary follow-up care. 

  * MCDOUGAL'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
The Robbers @ Yale Drama School (12-12 thru 12-18) Play by Friedrich
Schiller adapted by Becca Wolff & Jacob Gallagher-Ross. The anti-hero
creates a radical vision of a world where freedom is absolute &
violence the norm. Queer director Becca Wolff makes this a

  * PETER'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
For a fun family outing, check out Cirque du Soleil's spectacular

for both kids and adults is First Night Hartford .  December 31 : 2
p.m. - 12 am. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, First Night Hartford
is a city-wide New Year?s Eve party in Connecticut?s capital city?a
multicultural, artistically unique, alcohol-free New Year's
experience with countless professional musicians, artists,

LAST CHANCES for Flu Shots!! Get your free flu shot this year - there

and 12-16-08, 10am - 2pm at the Wellness Fair at Sterling Memorial
Library, 130 Wall St.

Did you know that not everyone learns material the same way?  
Understanding how you learn can help you study more effectively, be
successful in your choice of lab or mentor, and understand why your
labmate or PI behaves the way she does. Join us on December 8th at
6pm in HGS 119 for dinner and to take a  quiz to identify your
learning style.  We will have an  informal discussion  about how you
can use your new knowledge to smooth interactions with others,  be a
more effective communicator, and choose a lab that works best for
your learning style.  This fun discussion will be a great way to
unwind during reading week or the pre-holiday rush while turning an
eye toward your scientific and personal future!

  * YALE MEDICAL SYMPHONY: WINTER CONCERT  / (12-11-2008 7:30 PM)/
The Yale Medical Symphony, under the direction of Adrian Slywotsky,
will be performing Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Corelli's Concerto
Grosso Op.6 No.4 and Grieg's Symphonic Dances on Thursday December
11, 20008 at 7:30pm in the Harkness Auditorium (333 Cedar St) at the
medical school.  Admission is FREE!!  Brought to you by the Program
for Humanities in Medicine, YSM and YNHH.

  * 19TH ANNUAL TREES OF HOPE THRU 12-14
Come see dozens of beautifully decorated Christmas trees and get a
chance to win one for yourself. Admission is free, and all raffle
proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut. The
display lasts from December 6th through the 14th at the Long Wharf

  * YSFP WINTER SHOPPING & DINNER WITH DOUG AND DAVE  / (12-13-2008

Yale Sustainable Food Project hosts a two part shopping & cooking
workshop on how to eat locally & deliciously, even in winter. Dave
Thier will lead a tour of the New Haven Wooster Square farmers market
on Saturday morning. The tour will leave from Phelps gate as a group
at 10 AM Saturday. Dinner will start at 6:30 at Doug's place (235
Dwight Street). No one is expected to bring anything as everything
will be purchased at the market, but all will help prepare and cook.

  * MALARIA RELIEF CONCERT  / (12-13-2008 8 PM)/
Join friends, and family for an evening of lively international music
to help eradicate malaria!  The Tony Blair Faith Foundation is hosting
a Malaria Relief Concert in Woolsey Hall. Tickets are $10 per person,
and each ticket is enough to protect a child from malaria through
providing a bednet in endemic regions.  All proceeds go to malaria
relief.  Sponsored by the Graduate and Professional Student Senate

  * WREATH MAKING & HOLIDAY GATHERING  / (12-13-2008 10 AM - 2 PM)/
A warm and festive celebration using renewable and recyclable
materials! Activities are appropriate for children through adults,
and light refreshments will be provided. Weave a wreath or garland
from fresh evergreen branches cut in Connecticut, decorate farm
animal shaped cookies to make tasty treats, and save a tree by making
your own wrapping paper using nature-themed stamps on recycled paper

New Haven's Arts District offers an afternoon of family-friendly
events, including print card making at the Creative Arts Workshop, a
candy-laden Santa, live jazz music from student musicians, free
caricatures, and special offers from your local merchants

  * STORIES AND ART AT YUAG / (12-13-2008 1 - 2 PM)/
On the second Sunday of each month, we invite families to join us at
the Yale University Art Gallery for Stories and Art. Tales of distant
times and faraway lands inspire children of all ages to view art in a
new way. Yale students and Gallery staff tell folktales, myths, and
exciting stories from all over the world that highlight unique
features of selected objects in the Gallery?s collection. For
children of all ages. Drawing materials will be available for older
children. Group will meet by the couches in the lobby at 1:00 PM.

  * SANTACON COMES TO NEW HAVEN  / (12-20-2008 10 AM - ?)/
Santa's coming to New Haven on Dec. 20! For the first time, the
worldwide phenomenon of Santacon http://santarchy.com/santacon-2008/
spreads to New Haven! Join us as we spread holiday cheer throughout
the neighborhoods by dressing up as Santa Claus and consuming liquid
goodness at New Haven bars. We meet at Diesel on State Street at 10

  * FANTASY OF LIGHTS
Now through Dec 31! Drive through an enchanting land of sparkling
holiday light displays that are sure to delight children and adults
of all ages. Cost: $10 per car. Proceeds benefit Easter
Seals-Goodwill, which enhances employment, educational, social &
recreational opportunities for people with disabilities and other
challenges. Hours: 5 to 9 pm weekdays, 5 to 10 pm Fri & Sat,

  * MENTORS AND JUDGES NEEDED FOR NEW HAVEN SCIENCE FAIR PROGRAM!
Bring science to life for local schoolchildren. Mentors are paired
with students/teachers by matching desired grade, discipline,
location and availability as closely as possible.  The typical
commitment is one hour a week though early May (the Science Fair is
May 12-14, 2009 this year).  If you want less of a time commitment,
you can be a judge at the science fair itself.  For more information
