Many centuries ago, a multitude of individuals set off into the
Egyptian desert to start a quiet revolution. Seeking illumination
and wisdom, they fasted, did penance, experienced visions, and --
most importantly of all -- wove baskets! Come follow in the
footsteps of these brave souls and learn to weave a basket with us
in HGS! We'll have the opportunity to reflect on the connections
between basket-weaving and spirituality among different world
religions, as well as give you everything you need in order to weave
a beautiful basket! A $10 ticket gets you all the reeds and cane you
need for a choice beginner basket, along with pizza from Pepe's,
    soft drinks and snacks!

Rediscover with us one of the most common Italian tradition! The
Italian Society of Yale Students and Affiliates invites you to the
first potluck of the year: "Il pranzo domenicale" (the Sunday
lunch). As any typical potluck, everybody is invited to bring
his/her own cooking special to melt the gastronomic tradition coming
from all over the places. In order to better coordinate we kindly
request your RSVP to the e-mail address
italian.society.yale at gmail.com. Please let us know what you are
bringing no later than Friday 11 (8pm).

Frustrated about the public perception of science? Interested in
science outreach? Join Science in the News! We examine the science
behind the media reports we hear everyday and bring that information
to the public so they might better distinguish scientific fact from
pure speculation. For those interested in becoming a speaker,
auditions with a 5 minute talk will be held on November 9th at 7
    p.m., SHM I-116 (med campus) and November 10th at 7 p.m., ESC 110
(science hill). For more information email
sciencediplomats at gmail.com. Graduate/professional students and
postdocs in all fields of science and engineering are welcome.

*Introducing: the Sports & Recreation Fellows
*To help you attach names to faces, and to get to know a little about
the Fellows behind your events, tips, and announcements, we will be
using this new section of the Notes to introduce to you the 19 Fellows
of this year's Student Life Fellows team. Each week we will feature
Fellows from a different program area. This week we'd like you to meet
the Sports & Recreation Fellows, our hosts of the recent Grad Late
Nights @ the Gym.

***/Alyssa - Sports & Rec Fellow
/*A third year Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering, Alyssa is
happily balancing planning fun McDougal events with researching
combinatory genetic therapies for cancer while raising two adolescent
bunnies. Born in New Haven, Alyssa grew up playing soccer and lacrosse
and hopes to spread her love of sports to grad and professional students
at Yale. She greatly enjoyed her time last summer as a Fellow leading an
Outdoor Happy Hour Club around New Haven, and she is thrilled that the
Grad Late Nights at the Gym are super fun and well attended (come out
Tuesday night!)! She is also looking forward to organizing a field day
in the spring during which grad students can beat undergrads at everything.*

***/Kevin Y. - Sports & Rec Fellow
/*Kevin is a second-year Ph.D. student in Engineering and Applied
Science. Born in a country with civil unrest and growing up in three
different continents, he is a thrill-seeker by nature. He derives great
pleasure from investigating material science problems, coming up with
novel materials for solar energy and attempting to scale them into the
industry or business. He seeks thrill in activities such as extreme
water sports, rock climbing, bungee jumping, rugby, hockey, basketball
and soccer. This fall, he is looking forward to running some flag
football games during the Bagel Brunch on Nov 19 before the Harvard-Yale
game and the squash clinic in December.
