MENDELE Yiddish Language and Literature

Personal Notices and Announcements

Feb. 9, 2009

To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests:

1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance.

2. Send material as plain text: no HTML, other coding, or attachments.

3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has

posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames.

Dear Mendele readers,

I'm looking for the source and text of a Yiddish poem that an elderly
acquaintance recalls reciting on stage as a pupil in the International
Workers Order Yiddish school in the Bronx around 1939. I'm transcribing her
perhaps imperfect recitation of this poem from memory:

In Brooklyn in a shtibl
on vent un on a dar [sic.] [dakh? tir?]
hot dort gevoynt an eydl man
mit kinderlekh a sakh.

un dort iz nit geven keyn broyt
der oreman vet oyfshteyn.... velt
un geyt baym fus in Nyu-york
fardinen a bisl gelt...

The children ask their mother plaintively when the father will return, which
he does, carrying sacks filled with goodies, including chocolate.

A sheynem dank,
Kathryn Hellerstein
