MENDELE Yiddish Language and Literature
Personal Notices and Announcements
March 23, 2009
To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests:
1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance.
2. Send material as plain text: no HTML, other coding, or attachments.
3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has
posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames.
Dear Yiddishists,
My name is Sonia Gollance and I am a student at the University
of Chicago, and I am head of the planning committee for
Chicago’s first Yiddish Break, April 3 - 5. It will be a
weekend of Yiddish-filled activities for young people with an
interest in Yiddish language and culture. We hope to bring an
end to the woes of young Midwestern Yiddishists who are unable
to attend the Yiddish-related events that are usually held on
the East Coast. To that end, I invite you to join us at
Yiddish Break or to help us promote Yiddish Break by telling
your friends, family, and students about this amazing
opportunity. You don’t even need to know Yiddish in order to
enjoy this event!
Yiddish Break was founded by Yugntruf, a New York-based
organization dedicated to bringing young Yiddishists and
Yiddish enthusiasts together to learn about and experience
Yiddish culture.
Planning for Yiddish Break Chicago is well under way. We are
arranging some fun activities, such as classes and lectures on
Yiddish language, literature, and music, Yiddish/Yinglish
board games, and even a Yiddish dance workshop. It will be a
great opportunity to practice Yiddish and meet people who
share a love of Yiddish culture. For just $18 for
non-UChicago students, we will provide kosher meals and
homestays with University students, including shomer shabbes
rooms for those who need them. There will be limited travel
subsidies available. The next step is: we need you!
