ILLINOIS NATURAL HISTORY SURVEY

BIOLOGICAL FIELD ASSISTANT

Appointment: Biological Field Assistant at the level of Assistant
Supportive Scientist, Illinois Natural History Survey, Center for
Biodiversity. This is a grant-supported full-time position.

Location: Illinois Natural History Survey Annex in Champaign, Illinois.

Project description: Within the Illinois Natural History Survey, the
Statewide Biological Survey and Assessment Program is responsible for
providing environmental assessments for areas throughout the state that
will be affected by Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) highway
construction projects; these include but are not limited to new highway and
bridge alignments, improvements to existing highways and bridges, and
wetland mitigation associated with highway and bridge construction projects.

Job description: The principal duty of this position is to assist with
field surveys for mammals, mussels, and fishes at IDOT project sites. The
Biological Field Assistant will be guided by other IDOT funded biologists
but will work independently in the field on occasion. Field surveys will
include trapping and mist netting for mammals, brailing and hand sampling
for mussels, and seining and electroshocking for fishes. The Biological
Field Assistant will assist with report writing for the funding agency and
participate in curation and collections management as needed. Curation and
collections management will include, but not be limited to, data entry,
identification, specimen preparation, and handling of loans. If time
permits, outreach activities and independent research will be encouraged.

Qualifications: MA/MS in Biology or related field is required. Expertise
with field collection, processing, identification, and vouchering of
mammals, mussels, and/or fishes found in Illinois is required. Preference
will be given to candidates with expertise in more than one of these
taxonomic groups. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and
be able to express thoughts coherently, both verbally and in writing, to
coworkers, the granting agency, the scientific and lay communities, and
landowners associated with research sites. Experience with museum
collections, database management and analysis of data, and field work is
desirable. Familiarity with Macintosh computers and their software is also
desirable. This position requires the ability to lift and move heavy
equipment in the conduct of duties. The candidate must be able to swim,
must have or obtain a valid Illinois driver's license, and must be willing
and able to travel overnight, hike to remote sites, work at night and
outside under adverse field conditions. Ability to operate and maintain
small boats and motors is an asset.

Salary: $28,000 to 30,000.
