The University of Colorado Museum encourages use of its herpetological
collections. The collections include over 60,000 specimens, with
particularly strong representation of the southwestern U.S.(Colorado, New
Mexico, Arizona, and Utah: approximately 23,400 specimens) and Mexico
(19,100 specimens). The collection of Cnemidophorus is one of the largest
in the world, including 43 species and 11,500 specimens. Other taxa that
are well-represented include Sceloporus (64 species and 8,800 specimens),
Thamnophis (21 species and 2,300 specimens), and Bufo (44 species and
3,800 specimens). The collections database is fully computerized, thus
requests for specimen information can be answered quickly. In addition,
the numbers of specimens of each species are available online at the
California Academy of Sciences Combined Index to Herpetology Collections
website (http://research.calacademy.org/herpetology/Comb_Herp_Index.html).
The collections will be moved to a renovated facility in summer, 2001,
thus loan requests should be made by early 2001 or starting again in 2002.
Loan or other requests can be submitted by regular mail or e-mail to Alan
de Queiroz, Curator of Vertebrates, University Museum, Campus Box 218,
University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309-0218; e-mail:
dequeiro at stripe.colorado.edu, or to Rosanne Humphrey, Collections Manager,
address as above, e-mail: Rosanne.Humphrey at colorado.edu. Researchers and
students are also encouraged to visit the collections. Additional
information can be found at
