Insect @ thon is an annual school contest created by the National Museum of
Namibia and hosted by SchoolNet Namibia. The purpose of the Insect at thon 2000
is to computerize national biodiversity information (the insects of
Namibia), and promote the Internet at schools in Namibia (only 30% of
schools in Namibia presently have telephones, and only a handful provide
internet access to students). Insect at thon 2000 is a fun, interactive event
intended to encourage students to learn about computers, insects and the
environment, and gain access to the Internet -- a vast, and constantly
growing, source of information -- with the clear understanding that the
Internet, like telephones, electricity and other services, does not come for
free.

The target of the Insect at thon 2000 was to computerize some 50,000
hand-written insect records in five regional one-day events (Windhoek
Central, Keetmanshoop/Windhoek Eastern Circuit, Ondangwa East, Ondangwa
West, Erongo) with 10 school teams of 4 - 6 students at each event. We
especially targeted school teams which had not had ANY previous computer or
internet experience!
