Collections Data Management Workshops

The Specify Software Project will hold free workshops on biological
collections data management utilizing the Specify collections management
system at the 2001 Meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural
History Collections at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco.
Two workshops will be held immediately prior to the SPNHC Ice-Breaker
Reception on Friday, June 22 at the Academy.

Specify is a Microsoft Windows-based application that runs on standalone PCs
or on Windows NT or 2000 networks. It is a robust, well-supported,
scalable, computational platform capable of handling data from multiple
taxonomic disciplines and specimen preparation types. The Specify Windows
interface is highly-customizable and can be configured to meet the customary
practices of your institution. Specify has an embedded report designer
which can produce customized and precisely formatted labels, loan invoices,
catalog pages and other types of printed reports.

Specify and a suite of data, helpdesk and software support services are
available free for non-profit and academic research collections. The
Specify Software Project and its predecessor the MUSE Project, have received
13 years of continuous support from the US National Science Foundation.

The two interactive, hands-on tutorials with laptop computers will be held
at 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, and 3:00 PM- 5:00 PM. The sessions are free but seats
are limited to 10. To reserve a seat, or for more information, send e-mail
to <mailto:jdemouthe at calacademy.org> specify at usobi.org indicating which
session you would like to attend.

The Specify tutorials will be useful to anyone interested in automating
biological specimen data management or in evaluating Specify as an option
for their institution.
