UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS

The University of Alaska Museum, Department of Biology and Wildlife, and
the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
seek qualified applicants for a position as Curator of Mammals for a
tenure-track appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Professor of
Biology.  The appointee is expected to curate and develop the mammal
collection, teach one course per year (mammalogy alternated with a
graduate-level course in an area of specialty), supervise graduate
students, and establish a vigorous, extramurally funded research program
complementing programs in genetics and evolutionary biology.  The mammal
collection comprises the largest collection of Alaska mammals and
represents a major component of the Alaska Frozen Tissue Collection.  A
core laboratory for automated DNA sequencing and a supercomputer are
available.  Opportunities also exist to use field and research stations
such as the Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station and the Toolik
Field Station.  Applicants with experience in managing and using
traditional museum collections, possessing a background in evolutionary
and comparative biology, and with experience using modern molecular
techniques are preferred.  An earned Ph.D. is mandatory, and
post-doctoral experience is preferred.  A collection manager, laboratory
space, and start-up funds are included.  The appointment should begin in
August 2002.  Senior Associate and Full Professors may be expected to
assume a leadership role as senior curator of six biological
