Dear colleagues,

I am under pressure to discontinue use of naphthalene flakes in bird-skin
cabinets as a repellent to insects. The cabinet doors have seals, and the
room has fan-forced air-circulation, so the concentration of fumes is low
unless the cabinet doors are being opened. Nobody works in the room for
long periods. Despite this, concerns keep surfacing about the wisdom of
using naphthalene.
Can someone give a brief summary of the current practice among North
American collections with regard to repellents? If they are no longer in
vogue, what precautions against insect infestations are most commonly
implemented?

Thank you,

BRIAN GILL
