NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM MOVE

Pratt Museum of Natural History at Amherst College is moving from its
present building into new facilities and seeks a full time Project
Manager to oversee this transition. The new building will house both
Amherst's Geology Department and the Museum. This project is
internally funded as part of campus renovations with the new
facilities still in the design phase. This is a contract position
and will begin in January 2003 and continue through occupancy of the
new building, currently anticipated in 2006.

The Project Manager (PM) will work with the Museum Director, a
full-time Geology faculty member to plan and direct the removal of
the collections from the existing building and their installation in
the new facility. Responsibilities are broad and will include the
following: i) general project oversight, ii) liaison with geology
department, building architects and museum exhibit designers, iii)
verification of display content and text, iv) recruitment and
supervision of contract employees to carry out all aspects of moving
museum collections including updating the collection catalog, moving
the collection to a new storage system, disarticulating, moving and
rearticulating large vertebrate specimens, and packing and moving
collections.

The PM will have extensive experience in a natural history museum,
previous supervisory and managerial experience, and a demonstrated
ability to complete major projects on schedule. Preference will be
given to those who have at least 5 years natural history museum
experience, at least 2 years supervisory and managerial experience in
that context, vertebrate paleontology background and experience in a
museum move or renovation.

The Pratt Museum houses Amherst College's natural history
collections, including the world-famous Hitchcock ichnology
collection. These collections date back to the founding of the
college in 1821 and consist of extensive vertebrate paleontology,
mineralogy, invertebrate paleontology, and type specimen collections.
In addition, the museum has fewer but significant geology, osteology,
anthropology and ethnography collections. Located in scenic western
Massachusetts, Amherst is a part of the vibrant Five College
community. There are over 100,000 items in the Museums' collections.
More information on the Museum can be found at

To apply for this position, please provide a curriculum vitae, the
contact information for three references familiar with your project
experience, and a cover letter outlining your experience and
potential to contribute to this project. Send these materials to the
Museum Director, Prof. Peter Crowley, Department of Geology, Amherst
College, Amherst, MA 01002 (pdcrowley at amherst.edu). Application

Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with experience.
