Assistant Professor/Assistant Curator - Systematic Herpetologist


 

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Natural History
Museum and Biodiversity Research Center at the University of Kansas invite
applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor and
Assistant Curator levels in the area of systematic herpetology.  We seek an
individual with an active, collections-based research program and a
researcher who employs phylogenetic methods and integrated approaches to the
study of the systematics of reptiles and/or amphibians.

 

Duties: 

1.     Conduct an active research program in the biodiversity and
systematics of reptiles and/or amphibians with an emphasis on
collections-based approaches and phylogenetic methods.

2.     Serve as a Curator of Herpetology, with shared responsibility for the
growth, management, and use of the herpetological collections and their
data. 

3.     Teach courses in systematic herpetology, organismal diversity, and/or
general biology, as well as seminars in areas of expertise.

4.     Foster and direct graduate-student education and research.

5.     Interact with colleagues in related disciplines.

6.     Contribute to the overall service of the Department, Museum and
Biodiversity Research Center, College, and University. 

 

Required qualifications:  

1.     Ph.D. in appropriate discipline with evidence of a strong background
in systematics, herpetology, and evolutionary biology.

2.     Active research program in systematics of reptiles and/or amphibians
with demonstrated commitment to fieldwork and multiple, integrative
approaches (e.g., organismal, molecular, and biodiversity informatics) to
collections-based research. 

3.     Demonstrated commitment to excellence in development/management of
herpetological research collections and associated data for research,
education, and public service.  

4.     Demonstrated commitment to excellence and innovation in the teaching
and mentoring of both undergraduate and graduate students. 

5.     Ability to teach courses in systematic herpetology, organismal
diversity and/or general biology, and other core courses, as well as
seminars in areas of expertise.

 

Preferred qualifications:  

1.     Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding for research and
for collection improvement.  

2.     Curatorial experience, including management of collection databases
and specimen-based biodiversity information.  

3.     Research focus on reptiles, with demonstrable field experience.  

4.     Teaching and mentoring experience at graduate and undergraduate
levels.  

5.     Post-doctoral research and/or teaching experience.
